18. Sanctuary on the Border

Except for the King, major pieces on the Border enjoy sanctuary-- both from other major pieces and the Spy, but they are subject to attack by pawns. And pawns are subject to attack from any other piec-es on the board except the Spy. Left: the move is black’s: Santurary protects both the

bishop and rook as they

threaten the Field Queen, and the bishop and pawn have the King in check. The black pawn threatens the bishop and the black knight threatens the pawn. The black King cannot capture the pawn, since unlike other major pieces, it can be attacked on the Border-- in this case, by the rook.
